Hanhai Studio hosts US-China film Co-production and the Globalization of Chinese Films Panel in 6th Beijing International Film Festival

On April 19th, Hanhai Studio, Shenzhen Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Community and Chinese Film Alliance hosted US-China Film Co-production and Investment Panel at Beijing International Hotel.

Associate counsel of SARFT, deputy secretary general of Beijing International Film Festival Committee Jianguo Bian, Assistant Director of Beijing State-owned Cultural Assets Supervision and Administration Office Yonghong Gu, Deputy District Mayor of Huairou District Wujun Ren all attended the panel, which is supported by Huairou District government, Beijing International Film Festival Committee, Beijing state-owned cultural assets supervision and administration office and Xinhua Mobile TV. With the theme of “Creativity without boundaries”, panelist had deep discussions on successful US-China co-productions, the trendiest topics on film investment, cross-border collaboration and the globalization of Chinese films.

In this panel, hosts and guests launched “China (Huairou) Film and Television Production Demonstration Area Los Angeles Introduction Platform”, accelerating the process of globalization of Chinese films. There are more than 400 companies located in Huairou Film Base, including Bona Film Group, China Film Corporate Digital Production Base and Guanghua Film Center.  Over 2000 movies have been filmed there, such as Monster Hunter, The Founding of a Republic, Mojin: The Lost Legend, Great Wall and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. Hanhai Studio’s collaboration with Huairou District will promote the communication between Chinese film industry and Hollywood, introducing Chinese films to the world.

The panel consists of two sub-panels. The first one is “US-China film co-production and investment”, monitored by Peng Zhao, Chief Editor of CNC and President of Xinhua Mobile TV. Rob Minkoff, director of Lion King, Bennett Pozil, Executive VP of East West Bank, Tom Ara, Partner of Greenberg & Traurig, LLP, April Ye, President of Film Finance China, Yuqing Zhu, president of Juyinghui, and Kelly Zhang, COO of Hanhai Studio attended as panelists. Bennett Pozil mentions that East West Bank started back in 2011, knowing that they were going to lend in RMB [Renminbi] for film projects. “Our mission was to find Chinese-language product, through the Chinese distribution system,” says Pozil.

The second sub-panel is “Globalization of Chinese Films”. President of Chinese Film Alliance Hong Mei will be the host. Panelists include former Chairman of Hong Kong Film Awards Manfred Wong, Chairman of Chinese American Film Festival James Su, Executive Chairman of Canada China International Film Festival Miao Song, Founder and CEO of New York Chinese Film Festival Kaijie Wang,Chairman of China Image Film Festival Zhendan Jia and award-winning film producer Max Wang.  Guests share and discuss how to promote the globalization of Chinese films through US-China co-production.

Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), established in 2011, is a large-sized film activity sponsored by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality. BJIFF takes “Share the Screen, Shape the Future” as the keynote, aims at internationalization, professionalization, innovation & high-end, and marketization, and strives to build up a platform for promoting the Chinese film industry and enhance the Sino-overseas film exchange, transaction and cooperation."It's about time China connects its creative production and technology with Hollywood," says Hanguang Wang, chairman of Hanhai Holdings Investment Management Group. "Hanhai Studio’s collaboration with Beijing International Film Festival will introduce China's rich history and culture to the West, especially Hollywood, and promote Hollywood film in China. It is a great effort to promote the communication between both countries. “
